EDP vs EDT: What's the Difference?

In this article, we explain the common differences between the two most popular perfume strengths, Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette.

EDP or EDT are terms you'll see on some of your fragrances all the time. If you've ever wondered what the differences are, this article will answer your questions, so that the next time you go out to buy one, you'll know why you're choosing Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum.

Difference in Fragrance Concentration for Men and Women | My Perfume Shop - Australia

What is an Eau de Parfum?

This refers to the multitude of fragrance that – if chosen – can be worn by all genders, but is more generally associated with women. Eau de Parfum (EDP) has the second highest fragrance concentration, with oil concentrations ranging from 15 to 20%. You should expect your fragrance to last for four to five hours on average.

If you're looking for a new Eau de Parfum for yourself or a special someone, you can browse all our Eau de Parfum fragrances here.

This fragrance style may also be more dependable than others, regardless of the occasion, and is relatively less expensive than perfume. Opt for a luxurious Eau de Parfum if you're looking for anything more "date night" than "everyday wear."

The fragrance form is also more reliable than others and is less costly than perfume, it  is lovely to wear regardless of the occasion.

What is an Eau de Toilette?

For years, Eau de Toilette has been the most common fragrance power. The fragrance concentration in Eau de Toilette (EDT) varies between 5% and 15%. It is one of the most common forms of fragrance and is less expensive than EDP.

The perfume usually lasts two to three hours  and is said to even go five hours. It  is called daywear by others (while EDP is considered nightwear). The term eau de toilette came from the French term “faire sa toilette” that translates to “getting ready”. If you intend on wearing it every day, I recommend carrying it in a small bag that you can carry with you most of the time.

As compared to Perfume, Eau De Toilette is an even lighter essence, even lighter than EDP. It doesn't last as long (usually about two to four hours), but it does have a pleasant scent is perfect for any occasion.

If you're searching for a new scent, then an Eau de Toilette is always a great place to start.

The perfect entry point into the world of fragrances.

What Are The Key Differences?

When you see an Eau de Toilette and an Eau de Parfum of the same fragrance, it's likely that the formulations are the same and the concentrations are the only difference.

It's also likely that the perfumer tinkered with the recipe.

An Eau de Parfum has a scent that is a little heavier, more luxurious, and fuller than an Eau de Toilette. As a consequence, you always wear an Eau de Parfum during the day, evening, and even night! The majority of Eau de Parfums contain between 10% and 20% perfume oil.

The key distinction is the amount of perfume oil in the formula: an Eau de Toilette has less perfume oil in the formula and contains more water and alcohol than an Eau de Parfum.

You can choose between an Eau de Toilette and an Eau de Parfum depending on your preference for fragrance strength.

For example, in the Eau de Toilette, the perfumer will highlight the fragrance's light-footed and translucent character, while in the Eau de Parfum, the darker and sensual elements of the fragrance are more revealed.

Other Perfume Strengths

1. Parfum

A ‘parfum' has a higher concentration of essential oils than both an EDT and an EDP, with over 20% essential oils available, for a true touch of decadence. Thanks to their pure essential oil content, these amazing fragrances pack a real punch and always come with a matching price tag.

An example of an incredible Parfum would be the Dior Sauvage Parfum for men, which is known for its remarkable performance.

Perfumes have the highest fragrance concentration and will last the longest of all the other types: six to eight hours on average. Nevertheless, perfume or parfum will demand the highest price.

People with sensitive skin may do better with parfums as they have far less alcohol than other fragrance types and therefore are not as likely to dry out the skin.

    2. Eau de Cologne

Eau de Cologne (EDC) has a lower fragrance concentration (about 2% to 4%) than EDT's with high alcohol content, and hence is less expensive. It can last up to two hours in most cases

EDC's are typically sold in larger bottles since they are meant to be worn regularly.

Originally, Eau de Cologne referred to a typical recipe that included herb and citrus notes with little base note anchoring.

      3. Eau Fraiche

The fragrance of Eau Fraiche is similar to that of EDC in that it can last up to a few hours.

EDC has the lowest fragrance concentration, ranging from 1% to 3%.

Although Eau Fraiche has a low fragrance concentration, it also has a low alcohol content. Since Eau Fraiche is mainly water aside from the scent, it is also suitable for those with sensitive skin.

One of the most popular Eau Fraiche fragrances is Versace Eau Fraiche for men.

There are many more forms of fragrances, such as mists and aftershaves, beyond this list. Higher-end fragrances can be expensive, but doing your research ahead of time will ensure that you get the fragrance you want.

There are fragrance notes in addition to fragrance forms that define the final scent Although you don't need to be an expert to find the best fragrance for you, my advice is to know the basics, such as what I've shared.
